We know what it’s like… the dishes are stacking up, the carpet needs vacuuming, and bending over to do the laundry… it’s out of the question! A sudden on-set of back pain, or a chronic condition, can keep you from being able to complete day-to-day tasks.
The Back Pain Experts at Advantage Therapy in Ozark, MO have put together an easy-to-read tips for back pain sufferers right here in our community. Take a few moments to read these simple tips to get moving and get back to keeping the never-ending laundry pile under control.
Are the chores to blame?
Sorry to break it to you, but you can’t blame the chores for your nagging back pain. Instead, it’s how you do them. Rest assured, you’re not alone. Up to 90% of Americans deal with back pain at some point in their lives, which can be provoked by doing simple things like household chores.
Our expert therapists have created a list of 3 common chores and have told us what you’re likely doing wrong and what you can do better to keep your back pain in check.
Tips for Using a Vacuum or Broom if you have Back Pain Ozark MO
What you may be doing wrong: It makes sense when thinking that back pain can be provoked by vacuuming, sweeping, or shoveling snow. Reaching with your arms while also bending at the waist can strain the back muscles. Twisting motions with your feet planted aren’t a good idea either. Oh, and don’t even think about vacuuming in heels, as you see in the photo above.
What you should be doing: “You want your hips and shoulders to do the work,” says Chris Dieckhaus, DPT with Advantage Therapy in Ozark, MO. “If you can, try to limit how often you’re bending at the waist. Use a staggered stance with knees slightly bent to lunge forward instead of bending forward.” Staying upright as best you can will reduce the strain on your back muscles. The expert therapists at Advantage say not to get too caught up in doing as much as you can as fast as you can. “Remember proper body mechanics or you won’t be doing any chores for a long while,” says Chris.
Tips for Doing the Dishes if you have Back Pain Ozark MO
What you may be doing wrong: “It all goes back to bending at the waist,” says Chris Dieckhaus, DPT. “Most sinks are deep, which is great so you can fit more dishes in them, however this makes it harder on your back because you bend even more at the waist to reach the bottom.”
Don’t worry… the solution is easier than calling a handyman in Ozark, MO to install a new sink! (P.S. if you do need a handyman, check out the Ozark Chamber’s website to find a member!)
What you should be doing: A simple way to reduce your back pain while doing dishes is to open up the cabinet door below the sink. Place your foot inside and use it as a support and a way to find a comfortable posture. Another easy tip is to take breaks often and limit the amount of time you’re standing at the sink. Wearing supportive footwear can be important, too!
Tips for Doing Laundry if you have Back Pain Ozark MO
What you may be doing wrong: Reaching into the bottom of the washing machine to get that last sock can spell trouble for most people with low back pain. “Keeping a small step stool in your laundry room is a good idea to help you reach farther into the machine, but keep in mind that any forward bending motions can provoke pain.” Chris Dieckhaus, DPT with Advantage Therapy in Ozark, MO says that if you already have back pain it is best to leave that sock be. It’s not worth risking your back. Ask for help!
What you should be doing: Remember to take it easy! When bending over, using a “golfer’s lift” is helpful for picking up lightweight objects, like socks.
