Advantage Therapy‘s Chuck Renner, OTR, CHT is part of MACLA (Medical Aid to the Children of Latin America)… a Kansas City-based group of medical professionals that take annual trips to the Dominican Republic to provide much needed service to the needy.
Here’s how it works… Chuck travels with MACLA to Santo Domingo with lots of medical equipment in tow… check out the photo with the boxes of supplies on the rooftop. They begin with a couple days of clinic, where families stand in long lines for hours to be seen. The medical team determines which individuals need outpatient care and which patients are good candidates for surgery.
Surgeries are schedule & performed. Chuck assists the surgeons in the OR & creates custom splints/braces, and helps with post-op care.
The team will see these patients for follow-up visits before they head back to the U.S.
Check back to our blog each day this week to see new photos that Chuck has sent!
Peace Corps volunteers have arrived to help organize the warehouse of supplies.
MACLA had many, many boxes of supplies shipped to the Dominican Republic for this mission trip.
On Saturday night, the team met to go over the plan for the upcoming week. It’s sure to be a busy one.
Sunday morning prep meeting – ready to go!
People are lined up in the street, waiting for the hospital gates to open. The hospital is in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
A few hours later… and not much has changed.
This is the 1st stage of for surgery consultations.
The second story balcony is the waiting area for the 3rd stage.
The 4th stage is where surgeries are scheduled. I’m sure we’ll see photos of some of these kiddos later in the week.
Walking back the the hotel after a long day of clinic… with members of the anesthesia team.
Can any of our patients tell us what kind of flowers these are? Beautiful!
Just a couple of cool dudes Chuck met on the walk back to the hotel.
Stay tuned for more photos from the Dominican Republic later this week! You won’t want to miss out!
